Stuffed French Toast!!!

Hey guys...yesterday I told you I was gonna tell you about these fantasic stuffed french toast...that above is a pic I tore out of a Sept/Oct 1998 issue of a Taste of Home magazine (no I do not go around tearing pages out of the magazines in the doctor's office...well..there was that one time with that chocolate cake recipe...but I didn't have any paper with me!) Anyway I have made these several times for special occassions....well I decided it was one of those special occassions just for myself this week! lol Here is what you will need...this is very easy to do...just get everything lined up and get kinda of an assembly line going...I cook mine in butter in an electric skillet...but you can use a greased griddle....You will take the long french loaf and cut into 1- 1 1/2 inch thick slices ( barely cut the ends off and then I made 10 even cuts and ended up with 11 pieces from this large loaf) take each slice and cut a pocket about 3/4 the way thru..DON"T CUT ALL THE WAY! Spread butter inside....I use pre-cooked sausage patties...heat them in mirco wave and crumble in a bowl & then add the swiss cheese...now just start putting the sausage/cheese mix inside the pockets of the french toast..it will be messy..just press them together good and stack them on a plate.
You'll mix your eggs...milk...sugar & cinnamon in a wide shallow bowl...now you are ready to get the process going...get your skillet hot..I like to cook mine in butter but I have used oil also....now very quickly dip each pocket in the milk mix and turn it over quickly and dip the other side and put it in the skillet.continue to this until you have a full skillet...like cooking pancakes...they will get golden brown pretty quick so turn them over to the other side and brown them..
This is what you end up with!!!!! The smell is unbelievable!!!! I find that I have to make a second batch of the milk and egg mix cause it really soaks it up but that is easy to do...don't mash them down just let them get golden and flip! These things are great for Brunch buffets...served with maple syrup & a platter of fruit..plus they are so good just with eggs and grits...it really makes for a great holiday breakfast and it is so simple and good tasting!
I almost didn't get this pic for you...I had just fixed the plate and went to get the camera and Bill came thru and grabbed the plate and said 'thanks hon'...I yelled wait..don't mess it up I gotta take a pic for the blog!!! he said "W.H.A.T!!!!!" We're putting pics of our food on the blog now!?" Men....they don't understand blogging! lol lol

Stuffed French Toast

8 slices of French Bread

(1 1/2 inches thick)

soft spreadable butter

1 pkg (8 ounces) brown & serve sausage patties..cooked....I use the Jimmy Dean fully cooked ones (I put two at a time wrapped in a paper towel for 40 seconds in a mircowave)

1 cup shredded Swiss cheese

2 eggs

1/2 cup milk

1 1/2 teaspoons sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

pancake syrup (optional)

Cut your French Bread into 1 1/2 inch slices and cut pockets in them about 3/4 of the way thru...spread soft butter inside

cook sausage(or microwave if fully cooked) and crumble into little pieces and add it to the swiss cheese in a bowl..

now stuff each pocket with the sausage mix and press close

in a shallow bowl add eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon

get a greased skillet or griddle hot and dip each piece in the milk mixture and then cook until golden on both sides...place on a paper towel at first then transfer to your serving platter and serve with syrup or eat plain with fruit ...grits..or eggs.

The first time I ever made these was for a surprise Anniversary breakfast for mama & daddy some few years back....It was the biggest hit and mama said it made her feel so special to have something so fancy! lol lol Hope everyone is having a great week....I couldn't take it no longer..I broke down and put up a Christmas tree....I tried to wait people...but I needed some "Christmas Light Therapy" lol lol Being a "Martha" ain't all it's cracked up to be you know!!!! lol lol Love you guys!

Dot,

This looks yummy! I think I gain weight looking at your posts lately (at least that is my story and I'm sticking to it) LOL

My daughter's orthodontist use to get tired of me writing down recipes from his magazines and asking for paper that his receptionist finally told me to take the magazines home and bring them back at our next appt.

Oh, and my son got his first deer yesterday. They don't do the Primitive season, so our season didn't start until Saturday. He was excited.

That's a new stuffed toast recipe for me - I thought I had seen them all. Sure sounds good. Bob has become patient waiting to eat food I photograph. He thought it was funny to eat a brownie on a hand-painted rose plate. Guess that tells you we don't always eat on fancy dishes!!! Sally

Those look yummy!!!! Keep these recipes coming, I am loving them! My husband laughs at me now too about the whole pictures for the blog thing, they don't understand! How did your burly boys do hunting? Shotgun is this weekend and I really hope my hubby gets something, he's been really down about it this year. Have a good day Dot!

Dot,
That looks so good! I'm having company this weekend and this may be their breakfast Saturday morning. I got a kick about your husband! I made a pie this weekend and before he cut into it, my husband asked do you need to take a picture first? I said no, and then after he ate it and kept moaning with pleasure, I ran and grabbed my camera and snapped away! LOL
Thanks for all your fix and freeze recipes, too!

DOT!!! I love this, really I do!! I'm definitely making these, we are a frenchtoast lovin family and I think I'll make these for Christmas morning. One question Dot, why the cheese? Could you make these without it? OK I know I'm being a pain in the butt, I guess its the cheese that glues the bread together right? OK,OK, I'll trust you and make them exactly like you said! LOL!! Thanks sweetie! love ya! xo

Geez Picket I gain weight just looking at your pictures on your blog and the holidays aren't even here yet! This is another one I must try! I made your soup today and it was a hit. I goofed and bought diced tomatoes that had garlic and basil in it but I think that just added to the taste. Everyone who tried it loved it! Maybe you'll southernize me yet without chicken!! LOL!
