Breaking The Mold...

Morning guys....I am still tweaking in the house for Summer and I was just wondering.....how many of you feel that you have to use a mirror over your foyer table?

You see I have a small house...very small...and I have always heard use mirrors to make a space look larger and I do use alot of big mirrors...I love them...

See..I am standing at the back door coming in from the garage in the above pic...immediately to the left is my laundry room...that door you see to the left is my pantry and immediately to the right is the master bedroom and bath and then you can go outside to the back porch and yard thru the bedroom..

take a few steps and here I am about to walk into the kitchen...see how you can see into the living room...and the hallway that leads to the other two bedrooms and bath..and to the left you can turn and go into the kitchen and yonder is the dining room and then you can peek into the foyer....
See there is the door into the foyer....see my window frame mirror....I love that old frame but see the reflection of my stove and kitchen...

I love my foyer..but I just don't want to keep seeing my stove in the mirror...now you know me..
I just can't follow decorating rules...so I am always swapping things out...there was a time when I just thought is was taboo to not have a mirror over the foyer table...has anyone else ever been that tied to that habit (oh if you still are ...no offense intended....just keep coming around and I'll help you break that habit! lol)

I think it looks much better to have a stopping point when I look into the foyer...so I put this old picture of the country church up here...I got this at Michaels years ago on clearance...just love the old memories it brings up...

I put the old window frame mirror back into the cubby hole in the foyer where it use to be...
Now to me this is so much better than seeing the reflection of my stove! How about you....are you a mirror over the table person or a picture over the table type...just wondering...just for the record I am both! lol lol

Oh and I put my wheat dishes up and set the table again for Summer...too many touching hands come thru this house (and I don't mean the grandkids either!) and they would have messed up my dishtowels! lol lo

Have a great day you guys and don't be afraid to break the mold and do something different...you just might like it! ~♥~

Dot, I love your new foyer look, and especially love your tablescape. The candlesticks, flowerpot, vine ball, green accessories, and that precious little bird are just perfect for summer!

Good morning Dot, I have that same picture that I purchased at my Michael's years ago - LOL!! Are you sure we are not related somehow - I mean - so many things are similar in our homes. The old country church is now hanging in my mother's home. She never shops - she justs comes to my house and takes what I am not using - she loves "shopping" in my shed as well!!! Have a great day!

gasp!!! You put up your WHEAT dishes? Now don't you forget to put them out again in the fall--I remember how excited you got when you saw them on one of my posts cuz they brought back memories for you--you had to have some! :) Actually, I put mine away right after Thanksgiving. I don't have a place to display them like you do.

I love that window pane mirror of yours--I do know what you mean about being careful what a mirror reflects! I think that's why I have trouble using them as wall decorations, even though I love them. I also love your country church picute. We just visited the little country church in Arkansas where my mom and dad attended. They are buried in the cemetery that surrounds the church--so are many of my relatives on my dad's side.
Hope you have a great day--loved seeing all of the photos of your home! L, Dana

Hmmmmmmm, well, I probably would IF I had a foyer! I have a space about 3 feet x 5 feet that could hardly be called a foyer! But just inside, over the fireplace I have a huge mirror, does that count??? :o) Becky G.

Good Morning, Friend! I agree, a mirror can be a beautiful accessory, but only if you LOVE the view it reflects. Remember when I had that same picture hanging in my bedroom? I love where you have yours now, it is a true REFLECTION of who you are!

I LOVE your home! It is so cozy and welcoming. I live in a one bed apartment that I share with my hubby, crazy pup and little kitty. You give me great hopes in adding a tiny house into a welcoming home! I am so so glad I came about your blog. I will be back to take some tips from your pictures. Did I mention I love your home?! Very beautiful. As for the mirror over your entrance table, my only advice is to follow your heart.Either way looked good go me.

Take care!
Marcia

Well to see your stove in a foyer mirror can never be a bad thing. It all looks like I'm thumbing throught a country sampler mag! I do love your summer table centerpiece, how you used the greenery! Have a great one Dot!!

I guess I am a total non-mold kind of girl. I don't even have a table in our foyers. I have a oak hall tree which belonged to my husband's great-grandmother.

I think your new looks is great, but then again, I think everything you do is great. ;-)

I just love visiting your blog! I need so much inspiration right now. I am in a rut in my home decorating! My 2 girls moved home from college, one was only here about 3 wks and then moved out again. I have all their "college" stuff just layin around, waiting for them to take care of. I am embarrassed to say ...shhhh, I still have out my "Easter" decorations! Seems come warm weather the gardens take my attention and the inside gets put on the back burner. So please keep doing these inspiring posts...I need them! Thanks!

I didn't know there was a mirror over table rule! Guess I broke that years ago. I think the way you moved the mirrors makes total sense. And your centerpiece collage is so cute on the table!

Love your foyer. I also have a large mirror over a table in my foyer. The last thing I do when I walk out the door is make sure nothing is hanging out of my nose! :-)

Your home is beautiful and always will be because you decorate with your heart, Dot. Money cannot buy this precious gift.

With a mirror or picture....it is lovely!!

Blessings this day, Sweetie.

I don't have mirrors anywhere except my bathrooms and the back of my curio has a mirror in it. I don't like to be catching glimpses of this saggy, baggy, old soul. I feel younger and more attractive than the mirror says I am, LOL!! I don't necessarily follow any decorating molds at all. I just do what makes me feel comfortable bz after all, it's my home isn't it? LOL!

I absolutely love your cozy home. You claim that your house is small, but it can't be! It is so full of LOVE and JOY, I'm sure it must be HUGE!

Can't wait to see your next post - and I "STALK" your blog until there is a new one. :)

I don't have a mirror in my foyer, but have a beautiful fruit and grapevine wreath over my marble-top chest. I change out the items on the chest top for the seasons, but there is a small lamp on there that stays all the time.

THANKS for inspiring us EVERY SINGLE DAY. You make us better people! We decorate better and feel our spiritual side, too. So ... THANKS!

Not much happening here except it looks like Butch may be laid off, we filed for unemployment in the meantime! Rian, rain, and more rain, thats whats been happening here! Its gonna be a cool and wet summer I hear! Amelia fell running thru my bedroom today and has a huge booboo on her chin! All her booboos have been at my house!! I hung some birdhouses in the tree today and put out birdfood in the feeders, and now its raining! Gotta go sweetie, have a great day! xoxoxo

Your foyer looks wonderful! I have a mirror in mine, but it reflects a shelf with pretties on it, so it works. I esp. love your last pic that tablescape, I just can not get a table to look like that as hard as I try, you just have the magic touch! Sue

Hi Miss Picket. I agree that the picture is very pretty there. I always admire the paint color that you have. It's such a soothing pretty backdrop to all of your pretties!

I am missing blogging right now because my good computer is sick. Just visiting on my son's computer. :)

Oh Girl I have been breaking the mold for years and so far I am doing OK!! LOL

I think the rule with mirrors that comes first is - make sure they reflect something purty! So you actually are following the rules!! See and you didn't evwen know it.

Besides Dot, EVERYTHING you do in your home looks amazing. No matter hwo many times you tweak or move or switch out something, you do it right!!

hugs, Linda

Dearest Dot, can you forgive me for visiting so infrequently lately? Well, you'd better since you do the same thing to me! LOL
I think I'm more of a picture above the foyer table kind of gal. That's what I have hanging now in any case.

Your house may be small, but it looks like it's got a really nice, workable layout!

Hi Dot, how you doing? I break design rules all the time, i do what i like and what feels good to me. Im not so sure you are actually breaking a design rule because they say not to hang a mirror unless it reflects something that you think is lovely. Your home is beautiful, and you wouldnt know it was small, so many pretties to see.

The new look in your foyer is great! I'm so glad you used that window mirror in another spot, because I luv it! But I could not ever have a mirror reflecting anything in my kitchen (I am not a neat cook), so I know just what you mean. That picture you hung is so pretty. Great job. laurie
