Playing With The Dishes...

Well guys here it is Thursday already..if the time keeps flying by like it has been lately...we'll be carving Thanksgiving turkey before you know it! I been playing in the kitchen this morning...I got out the old wheat dishes (you know the ones that you use to collect in the Duz washing powders...of course I'm not thatttttt old...I just bought mine off Ebay! lol)

I do love the memories they bring back for me though...one of my aunts had the whole set and I never thought much about them back then...

But one day I saw where our very own Dana over @ The Stone Rabbit had done a tablescape with them....and the moment I saw them I started crying...

I couldn't believe the flood of memories that came rushing over me of my childhood and my sweet Aunt Odell....

So I immediately set out to find me some and I am so glad I did...some were even given to me by sweet blogger friends...how precious is that! So I decided to play with them seeings as how I want to rearrange the china cabinet that they were in...first I tied back the curtains...yes that was important..they were messing with me being all straight and stiff! ( I used a cord that I cut off of the bamboo blinds that Bill has on the back porch..he lets them down when the morning sun is too bright on me while I am sitting in the swing...I left just enough for them to come down to the rail...he'll never miss it! lol)
Then I got serious about playing with the dishes...I used the dishclothes that I bought at TJ Maxx that matched the color of my dishes I bought there a couple of weeks ago....I used the new dinner plate as a charger....
See all the different dishtowels!!!! lol

That center piece will not be staying...I haven't been to the grocery store yet to get fresh flowers...
I had my amber goblets like my grandmother's but they didn't have the look I wanted..so I used my Jamestown goblets (correction......I sent Bill down to Jen's house to sneak in while she was at work to get my Jamestown goblets back that I gave to her a few years ago..she doesn't use them and she will never miss them....

UPDATE: Oh lordy...Jen just called ask what I been doing...told her playing tablescape in the kitchen...she said 'that's nice mom...you always make things pretty'....guilt set in..I had to tell her about the glasses....I think I could feel the steam coming thru the phone....MOM!!!! lol lol

You can tell Martha doesn't live here....we are country folks and we keep our silverware simple!

I am just loving the mix matched 'place mats'....

I am loving even more the warm beautiful feeling I have when I look at these old wheat plates...

Speaking of old....does anyone else out there have the old Sears Mushroom canister set! I bought mine back in 1973...it has traveled to 4 states with me and not a crack or chip....

I found the little creamer and salt & pepper shakers a few years ago at thrift stores....

There are quite a few things from the 70's that I still love....

So there you have it...that's my morning of playing...now I better get to 'playing house' and turn on the vaccuum cleaner and washing machine! lol

To see some sure enough beautiful tablescapes...go over to Susan's @ Between Naps On The Porch.. it's Tablescape Thursday! There is some great inspiration out there in blogland...but always remember...never and I mean never be intimidated just because you may not have the fancy crystal or silverware or dishes....that is not what tablescapes are about...you take ideas and use them with what you have...use them with how YOU live....live with what you love. The idea is to make your surroundings and your home feel warm and inviting to you and your family...look around at what you have stashed away in those cabinets...those old dishes your grandmother won at the county fair can look mighty pretty mixed with those old jelly glasses....just don't be afraid to try and decorate....you're family may not say anything but they will love the special touches you do for them everyday....take care guys and have a great Thursday! ~♥~

Good Thursday afternoon! Your table turned out so pretty...I love the different placemats.
Ro at A Hint of Home...she HAD those canisters. I think she got rid of them a few years back. Better not show her or she will be sad!
I just went to a wedding shower and the bride's colors for her kitchen? Avocado green, gold and orange...hello?? did I fall asleep or something for 30 years!

It's all so pretty. I love how your new yellow dishes mix with the wheat pattern. Sorry but I had to laugh that y'all snuck in to get those goblets. Something tells me that your daughter didn't really mind. :)

I very much love those old dishes, too! Now, you know who I will be thinking of when I see them in a thrift store or at a garage sale! I love the way they match all your TJMAXX-imus finds--did you know they would look so good together when you bought them?

I AM that old that I remember my Grandmother getting them from the DUZ boxes, but she was not a real sentimental old gal! By the time I was actually old enough to care about them, she had updated and "gotten rid of those old things!" :(
Your table looks so nice...maybe I can find some of those pretty dishtowels that will go nicely with my only set...my 1970's Pfaltzgraff Village! BTW...they look real good with the Thanksgiving turkey on 'em, but I haven't had enough Summer burgers and potato salad yet! LOL!!

Have a great day, Dot!

Hey Picket,
My Mom had those dishes and I remember her pulling them out of the Duz box. After that she had the brown with with tan Pfaltzgraff dishes, I have a few of her pieces, I left so many in her home when the people buying it wanted it furnished...I should have, could have, but didn't, now I wish. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Now in 1973 I had orange counters gold appliances and wallpaper along with a patterned floor, Oh My.

Oh my gosh,

Both my grandmother and my hubbys grandmother had these wheat dishes.
We were given a few plates and a couple of bread plates :)
It was so unexpected to see these today.
Thank you for the memories.
I guess I need to dry my eyes and go find the few I have and suprise my hubby.
Thank you so very much .
Blessings to you .

Kevin's aunt had two sets of those mushroom canisters and accesories. ...she passed them on to me. Do you need any more pieces? I can look through them and see if we have what you need! I was saving one set for the farmhouse, but the other is just taking up room! Let me know!

Your playing paid off and into another tablescape of beauty! It made me hungry on this stormy rainy day for turkey, mashed potatoes and some yummy gravy. The 70's were great, weren't they? I had orange formica counter tops and thought they were gorgeous! I still love my pyrex from that era and even use our Corelle ware on most days because of how light they are easy to stack in the dish washer.:)!
My mom has the beautiful gold goblets...I might have to borrow, say about 4 of them. Hopefully she won't mind! Jen made me smile!
Thanks for the memories!

Picket, my Momma had those same wheat dishes when I was growing up! Oh boy the memories are flowing back to those good old days of roast and mashed taters on those wheat plates:) Beautiful table setting and I love the new dishes as chargers and the place mats and the goblets. Thanks for playing today. It was so much fun:)

Your new dishes were meant to go with the wheat dishes. AND, the color of the placemats (aka dish towels) are perfect. Tell Jen to hang in there - she'll get the goblets back eventually, I bet. I'm an Indian giver, also; as I'm always borrowing back things I have given the kids. Especially, if they are using them. Have a great weekend. Sally

Hi Picket! Oh,how pretty! I love your Wheaty dishes and you've made everything look so nice. Now, I had to giggle when you said you sent Bill to get those goblets back! He's such a good hubby! :)
Love your dish towel placemats! The colors are certainly perfect! You didn't mentions that square bowl on the table, but it's marvelous!
I never had those mushroom canisters, but I knew so many who did! They're precious!
Be a sweetie and love your advice, Most Wise One!

You know Picket, everytime I see that pattern I am drawn to it...you succeeded in your goal of making everything warm and inviting...love the use of different dishcloths!
Also, your words of encouragement regarding joing in were so kind. I imagine there are many who are just starting homes and may be intimidated about joining in...I say, the more the merrier!

Dot I wish I had time to relax and play in my kitchen, I know, I have 3 days off but by then I'm exhausted and don't take the time to play! OK, enough of the pity me party! The plates look so great with the chargers and the different linens, I'm lovin the soft colors, really pretty Dot! Just think, soon you will have both daughters to trade stuff with!! Come by and see Amelias dancing! TTYL! xoxoxox

Hi Picket, another post where you speak to my heart. I couldn't agree with you more, it's those little touches that lets our family know how important they are. The name on the bottom of the plate doesn't matter! I almost cried when I saw your canister set, I was given a set of those when I got married! When green and gold came back "in" a few years ago, I said, "Oh, no! Not me, I had all that years ago." But guess what? I'm loving those colors all over again. I thought I was the only one who gave things to my kids and then wanted them back when they weren't using them! HA

Good Morning Picket,

I was thinking about emailing you the other day, I've just been extra busy and time seems to be speeding by.
I love setting a table with dishes that have fond memories. Although these days, I'm lucky to get dishes on the table for our meals. Between First Communions, Graduations, Birthdays and Weddings, I feel like I'm in a whirlwind.
Did you get your pumpkin seeds planted?
Our son his here this weekend and I can hear him stirring, so I better get breakfast started. Keep in touch and hope your weekend in a good one.

Ok Dot, this was so cool reding through your blog this morning. My mom had a set of those dishes with the wheat pattern on htem, now not a whole set like you have, but I do remember eating off of those plates as a little girl. The mushroom canister set I had when Mike and I first got married. Mushroom deocr was real popular back in the early 80"s and I has a set in our first home we shared! Thanks for the memories this morning. Mom and I are having a tag sale at her house this afternoon. The work is all done, everything is tagged, but weve had a rain delay. So I haven't headed over there yet. I so want her to go back a reread your blog. You and here would be great fiends if you lived near by. I know she would love you. Your writings would inspire her too! She loves reminising about the past and your stories and memories remind me of her. Have a great day!

I just had to comment on the mushroom canister set! What a flashback! I got the entire canister set and salt/pepper shakers as a wedding present in 1975. I used them for years. At least one is glued together. They now sit on a shelf in my fruit cellar. You make me want to get them out!! I also inherited my grandma's dishes and I'm almost sure they're just like yours. Sadly she isn't here to ask her where they came from.

I so enjoy your blog. I have read it for months!

He said, "Oh really! We have too many sets of dishes!" That's a man for ya! The whole set was only $25.00....teapot and everything....You would have loved it!

Picket: You're absolutely right, the esophageal spasms do feel like a heart attack. The GI doctor told us that most people think they're having heart attacks when it happens. It breaks my heart to see him hurting so much and not be able to do anything about it. Jill is an absolute angel though. She knew when she agreed to marry him that he had this medical condition and that they would probably always have medical debt but she's agreed to do it anyway. Bless her little heart, who knew it would start just two weeks into their marriage. Larry and I are covering all medical bills until they're married. Our insurance doesn't cover him as he's over the age of 19. It's drained what we had for Trav's mission so we're just walking by faith that we can get by. We now have a grundle of medical debt from it but I'd rather have Nicholas get better. I overheard the doctor saying some pretty nice things to his nurse about Nicholas and then I heard him say, "he has a horrible disease" and then told her to do whatever they could to help us afford the procedures. He's a good man who truly cares about his patients. Anyway, sorry this turned into a novel but I'm on a break at work (working all the overtime I can right now) and so I had a minute to stop by. Thanks for your prayers for him, I usually don't ask people to pray and I'm glad you took the initiative bz he certainly needs divine intervention at this point (so does Trav). :) Thanks.

Oh your table looks awesome! I had thought that I had the same dishes as you, but now that I see your dishes again, you have a gold color in the wheat. Mine are the Golden Rhapsody pattern by Kayson.

My mom had the golden rhapsody dishes. Her father owned a Mobil gas station and they were something people could earn for buying gas there, but he gave her a whole set for free! My brother has the set, but I found matching dishes at Goodwill. Like your dishes, mine sure bring back wonderful memories and make me feel closer to my mom who has been gone 27 years this month.

It's too funny that you "stole" the goblets from your daughter! hehehe!
